The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party joins the nation in mourning the passing of Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence, who departed this life on 7th September, 2025.
Sir Edmund lived a life of purpose, distinguished by his unwavering dedication to education, nation building, and the empowerment of our people. From his early years as a teacher shaping young minds, to his remarkable academic pursuits abroad, he carried a deep and abiding belief in the transformative power of knowledge.
In 1970, guided by vision and determination, Sir Edmund founded the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank. What began modestly has since grown into a multibillion-dollar enterprise, today holding more than $3 billion in assets and generating annual profits in excess of $50 million. It stands as the largest indigenous bank in the Eastern Caribbean. Sir Edmund’s foresight also led to the creation of the National Bank Trust Company, the National Caribbean Insurance Company, and the St. Kitts and Nevis Mortgage and Investment Company. Together, these institutions established a solid financial foundation that continues to empower generations of Kittitians and Nevisians. His pivotal role in their birth and growth remains one of the most enduring legacies of his life’s work.
Sir Edmund’s contributions extended far beyond finance. As a statesman, he served with dignity and honour as the third Governor-General of St. Kitts and Nevis, representing the Crown and country with distinction. He was a man of vision, service, and deep faith, whose work strengthened our nation and uplifted our people.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party extends heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Lady Hulda Lawrence, his children, and all members of his family. We share in their grief, but also in the pride of a life so well lived.
Sir Edmund will be sorely missed but never forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire, his work will continue to bear fruit, and his memory will live on in the institutions he built and the lives he touched.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
